Hong Kong Code-mixing Dictionary

A contemporary Cantonese-English dictionary

Instruction: Collect examples where English is mixed into a Cantonese conversation by filling in this form. You may also read the guidelines below.

You may also submit a definition via a Google Form or by creating an account.

Submission guidelines

  1. You can be creative and fun, but try to be accurate when giving the example usage because this dictionary focuses on collecting real world language usage. If possible, include the URL as reference.
  2. If you are having a hard time explaining the speaker’s preference in using English over the Cantonese words, you can simply say it is a “code-mixing” or you can leave the explanation to me! 😊
  3. Try not to include too much profanity as they will be censored by asterisks (*). Also, this is meant to be an educational resource for all ages as possible.
  4. Write as if you feel inspired to! This dictionary was created to give Hong Kong bilingual language users the space to justify their language usage and to help others understand the different code-mixing patterns in Hong Kong. You may also read about the Mission of Hong Kong Code-mixing Dictionary here.
  5. If you are an overseas Asian who has a habit of mixing English words into your Cantonese conversation, you can still contribute even if you are not a Hong Kong bilingual! 😊
